Poplar Springs Hospital, a TRICARE®-certified facility, is committed to providing a stigma-free treatment environment in an inpatient setting, specifically designed to meet the needs of active duty personnel, ages 18 and older, in all branches of the military.

Three specialized, extended-care treatment programs are offered for substance abuse and dependency, combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dual diagnosis. The substance dependency treatment track focuses on recognition and understanding of the bio-psycho-social aspects of addiction as well as the development of relapse prevention skills.  The PTSD treatment track focuses on the emotional and psychological effects of combat stress and post-deployment, adjustment-related issues.  The dual diagnosis track addresses the treatment issues related to both substance abuse/dependency and PTSD.

The Heatherwood Retirement Community offers both independent living and assisted living throughout the community, which means when a residents requires additional services, they do not need to move from their apartment. Capacity for assisted living is 150.

When a resident at Heatherwood needs assistance with their activities of daily living, an assisted living service package is available. This package can be customized to meet the resident’s care needs and the cost can be adjusted. An assessment by a Registered Nurse at Heatherwood determines the care needs of residents. An Auxiliary Grant (AG) is an income supplement for individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and certain other aged, blind, or disabled individuals who reside in a licensed assisted living facility (ALF), an approved adult foster care (AFC) home, or an approved supportive housing setting. The money received, plus other income is used by the person to pay for the care provided by the home.  Individuals who receive money from this program are also eligible for Medicaid. Not all ALFs accept AG payments.

To be eligible, a person must:

  • Be 65 or older, blind or disabled
  • Have countable resources of less than $2,000 for one person, $3,000 for a couple
  • Have countable income that is less than the approved rate for the home plus an allowance for personal items
  • File an application in the locality where the person lived prior to entering the adult care residence or adult-care home
  • Have been assessed and determined to need care in an adult care residence or an adult family placement

Cumberland Mountain Community Services Board's (CMCSB) Behavioral Health Psychiatric and Medication Management Services diminish the effects and symptoms to all individuals diagnosed with a behavioral health, substance use, or developmental disability disorder who are being discharged to CMCSB from state facilities and are prescribed psychoactive medications. Services may be provided through satellite offices in Cedar Bluff, Grundy and Tazewell.

Upon discharge, these individuals are immediately accepted for psychiatric evaluation and medication management within the four psychiatric clinics. Individuals who are being discharged from private programs will be reviewed by CMCSB psychiatric services staff for acceptance into these services. Program directors, program coordinators or supervisors and the psychiatric staff will review all other referrals to the psychiatric clinics for approval. Eligibility for acceptance into the psychiatric clinics will consider the limited resources that are available.

Activities of Mental Health Psychiatric and Medication Management Services include the following:

  •     Psychiatric assessment;
  •     Evaluation;
  •     Treatment and monitoring that may include medication management of psychoactive medications, ordering, distributing and delivering prescribed medications, informing individuals of the risks, benefits and possible side effects of prescribed medications;
  •     Monitoring and managing side effects and reactions to prescribed medications;
  •     Assisting individuals who do not have Medicaid or insurance in obtaining medications;
  •     Consultation to staff and community providers on individual’s psychiatric care plans.

BT Access is a paratransit door-to-door service complementing fixed route bus service in Blacksburg. The service is available for persons with a temporary or permanent disability who meet the criteria established under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Amended Act of 2008 to travel within the Blacksburg town limits. There are fully accessible low floor buses, and BT ACCESS compliments this service.

The service known as door-to-door allows the BT ACCESS operator to accompany the eligible passenger from their door to the first exterior door of their destination. BT ACCESS offers Travel Training for passengers who are eligible for BT ACCESS services, but may also be able to use the accessible low floor buses. Riding the bus does not jeopardize the ability to use BT ACCESS services, but allows the passenger more flexibility and freedom to travel whenever they choose.

At Southside Community Services Board, Child and Family Services Crisis Service Coordination provides children and their families with assistance to stabilize unsafe behaviors, manage stressful situations and maintain their child's residency in their home communities. Services include:

  • developing individualized crisis stabilization plans,
  • assessing need for services,
  • referring and linking families to support services,
  • coordination with other service providers,
  • monitoring, and advocacy.

The program focuses on effective intervention for children who experience thoughts and feelings of harm to themselves or others and have significantly poor functioning at home, school or within their communities that may require psychiatric hospitalization or removal from their their homes. Children with a primary developmental disability diagnosis are linked to developmental disability Support Coordination services.
